Concert Review: Avril Lavigne "The Black Star Tour" Singapore

by Kar Yan, spinorbinmusic.com, May 11, 2011 -- Avril Lavignes been off the music radar for awhile (what with Abbey Dawn, making perfumes, and recent heartbreak) but our Girlfriend is finaaaally back! She performed at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Monday night and can I just say her Black Star tour is like the Best Damn Thing ever?!

The Canadian singer-songwriter reminded us that shes still a bloody good performer and reconnected with fans over the most fantastic setlist, which includes a mix of her hits/classics (think Sk8er Boi, Complicated and My Happy Ending) as well as new songs from Goodbye Lullaby.

The crowd was ecstatic when she sang What The Hell and as if it wasnt enough, Avril heated things up further with a screaming competition between the fans.

Just a sample of how energetic/welcoming she was: “YEAH SINGAPORE, I DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU GUYS BUT IM REALLY HAVING A GOOD TIME TONIGHT! JUST TO MAKE SURE YOURE READY FOR THE BLACK STAR TOUR, LET ME HEAR YOU SCREAM AS LOUD AS YOU CAN! This song is called Sk8er Boi and I wanna hear everybody sing along!” :D

After all, many of Avril’s songs are upbeat / infectious rock tunes and all about letting go ;) which is exactly what her concert was all about!

That said, her voice has an ethereal quality when it comes to haunting/power ballads like Alice or When Youre Gone (which Im sure many fans love about her) though she did get a little hoarse. Avril cleared her throat, apologizing and quickly double-checked with fans to ask “But are you guys having a good time?!”

She cracked me up with Stop Standing There, drawling “dont you ever want to just say that to guys sometimes? Just Stop Standing There! Do something please, make a move!” before showing off her skills on the piano as she sang.

I only let myself be introduced to her new songs (not counting singles WTH/Smile) from Goodbye Lullaby at her concert and I loved every bit of it. Avril has sure emerged a more matured singer/person – her tunes are more mellow (yes, theres more piano) but still retain her bold/candid attitude and style.

My favourites that night, however, were still the oldies - Complicated and Girlfriend.

It takes a hell lot of stamina for all these songs and the girl just kept singing, slamming on her guitar and jumping away. Hers is by far the most honest/sincere concert I have ever been to. While other artists sound rehearsed (and occasionally patronizing), Avril gave it her all and was brilliant with stage banter, constantly shouting out her love for fans, getting everyone to sing along and weaving Singapore into her lyrics.

Time flies by when youre having a good time and before we knew it she was saying goodbye. It wouldnt be an exaggeration to say that there wasnt a single low point in her concert and Hell yeah, Avrils the motherfucking princess!
